The 3 Fundamental Stunts

Lion dance is an art form that combines culture, strength, and acrobatics. While advanced performances feature impressive jumps and high poles, every team begins with mastering the three fundamental stunts: Double-Leg, Single-Leg, and Head Sit. Though each team may have different names for these stunts, the techniques remain the same.

1. Double-Leg Stand (双脚站立)

The Double-Leg Stand is the foundation of many lion dance stunts. It requires strong coordination between the head and tail players to create a stable platform.

How It Works:

  • The tail player takes a horse stance, forming a solid base by bending their knees and keeping their feet firmly planted.
  • The head player steps onto the tail player’s thighs, standing with feet turned slightly outward (like a penguin) or with toes pointing inward toward the center.
  • Balance and teamwork are key! The tail must remain firm while the head maintains proper posture.

2. Single-Leg Stand (单脚站立)

A step up from the Double-Leg, the Single-Leg Stand requires the tail to lift the head completely off the ground, supporting them on just one leg.

How It Works:

  • The tail player locks their elbows straight and lifts the head player fully into the air.
  • To lower the head player, the tail will step back with their left leg or forward with their right leg, guiding the head player’s right foot onto their right thigh.
  • The head player must stay light on their feet, ensuring a smooth transition.

3. Head Sit (坐头式)

The Head Sit is one of the most visually striking stunts—and surprisingly, it’s the easiest! However, proper technique is crucial to avoid injury.

How It Works:

  • The tail player lifts the head player onto their head without bending forward or “ducking under” (which could cause neck strain).
  • The head player curls up towards the tailbone to keep balance, avoiding pressure from their butt bones on the tail’s head.
  • The tail player must keep their head straight and look forward to prevent injury.

Safety!

These three stunts form the foundation of lion dance acrobatics. Mastering them will build strength, trust, and coordination between partners—essential for executing advanced moves with power and grace. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned performer, always practice with safety in mind and focus on technique.

Train hard, stay balanced, and bring the lion to life!
